Taiwan scooter two-stage left turns: read the intersection before turning

Navigation says turn left, a friend’s message says some junctions no longer require a two-stage turn, and scooters ahead move in different directions. Three answers speak at once; your brain nearly freezes. You want to arrive on time without guessing in the middle of the road. Leave the message for later. Navigation gives a destination; the actual junction tells you how to proceed. This is not a group vote: the majority is not automatically your answer.

01 · What to know

Read each intersection afresh

After stopping safely, you open Article 99 in the national law database linked below. A change at one junction cannot be applied throughout Taiwan. Follow signs, markings and traffic direction first, then the relevant rules where no specific instruction applies. An inner lane barring motorcycles and certain positions on one-way roads with three or more fast lanes involve two-stage turning requirements.

Instead of asking your friend whether the rule was abolished, you ask what to look for next time. They admit they meant the junction near home. “Your street corner does not have a nationwide pass.” You laugh together. Familiar roads can change; unfamiliar ones deserve early attention. A checking sequence is more dependable than an easily outdated slogan.

02 · What to know

Complete a required turn in two stages

At a junction requiring a two-stage turn, follow the original direction’s signal into the designated waiting area when permitted. Reorient, then wait for the new direction’s permission to proceed. Do not occupy a pedestrian crossing, block other traffic or force into insufficient space. Think of arranging your direction twice; there is no prize for completing it before everyone else.

You expected the extra wait to be irritating. Knowing where to go early makes your grip less tense. Eyes attend to traffic, hands to riding; the phone waits until you have stopped safely. The Highway Bureau link below explains the manoeuvre. The article photo is illustrative, not an answer sheet for the junction in front of you.

03 · What to know

Keep a safe option when unsure

If you miss the lane or cannot understand the signs in time, continue lawfully and safely and adjust the route later. Do not cut across suddenly. Navigation may insist on the original route; there is no need to argue. Preserve your room to decide. A detour can be replanned; moving traffic is not the place to correct everything at once.

At the shop, your friend asks about the delay. You explain the uncertainty. They slide over the drink: “Let’s check the route earlier next time.” The drink has not graded you, and your friend does not demand a flawless journey. Remember: observe the junction, choose the method, leave a margin. Your destination remains there; take the turn with a clearer rhythm.

Can I just follow the rider ahead?

No. Check your own vehicle category, lane and signals.

Can I wait on the crossing if the box is full?

Do not obstruct pedestrians or other traffic.

Can I leave as soon as I enter the waiting box?

Wait for a signal permitting travel in the new direction.

Does a navigation instruction allow the turn?

Navigation is route guidance; on-site traffic controls still apply.
