A scooter accident in Taiwan: people first, then records and reporting

Dinner is still hanging on the scooter when a collision interrupts the ride home. Your phone keeps lighting up. Family ask where you are, but your fingers will not quite cooperate. You do not have to become a medic, photographer and everyone’s contact person at once. Check whether anyone is hurt and whether your position is safe. Take one task at a time. You can ask for help too.

01 · What to know

Put people’s safety first

Tell the operator the intersection and nearby shop. Call 119 for anyone injured and 110 for police, giving the location, vehicles and injury situation, then follow instructions. If you cannot recall the address, use a building number or clear landmark. Get people help first. Do not delay assistance for photographs or step into traffic.

When it is safe, record vehicle positions, markings, impact points and fixed surroundings, retaining original images. You want to explain that you were not at fault, but take a breath and describe what you actually saw. Tell police about missing angles instead of risking another photograph. People first, records second: order matters more than quantity.

02 · What to know

Moving vehicles depends on the situation

Someone insists the scooter must move. Quietly, you ask, “Can I move it now?” Asking is enough; the loudest bystander need not decide. Where no one is injured or killed and the vehicles remain driveable, make the necessary records, then move them to a safe place that does not obstruct traffic. With injuries or deaths, prioritise rescue and police, following instructions for the circumstances.

You ask the responding officer to repeat the next step and finally know where to stand and what to do. Moving vehicles in an injury case has additional legal conditions; another person’s experience is not a universal rule. The E-government guide below can be read afterwards. At the scene, listening and clarifying help more than pretending to be calm.

03 · What to know

Let a checklist handle the follow-up

Once safe, list the rental provider’s and insurer’s requirements for notification, towing, repairs and documents. Ask family to check with you. Scene plans and photos can be requested after seven days, and a preliminary analysis after thirty; confirm eligibility and channels with the handling unit. The National Police Agency link below is the application entry. A preliminary analysis is not a final determination of liability.

Dinner is cold. Today, you do not have to force every task back onto its original timetable. Put the documents in one folder named “Accident records”, finally avoiding “New folder seven”. That small everyday joke can wait until you have caught your breath. Remember: care for people, record safely, then notify. With someone helping check the list, the next step need not rely on your memory alone.
