Scooter parking in Taiwan: find a space before picking up dinner
Hypothetical scenario: after class, you stop to buy your roommate dinner. There is an empty patch outside the shop. “Everyone parks here,” your friend says. Then you notice someone pushing a stroller towards the entrance and take your hand off the key. You want dinner hot, but people need room to pass. Park first; decide on the extra egg afterwards.

An empty patch is not necessarily a parking space
You were about to park beside the door when you hear a stroller wheel catch. That apparently spare space is the way people enter. “I am only buying dinner” sounds familiar, but it does not establish permission to park. Articles 111 and 112 of the Road Traffic Safety Regulations prohibit parking where temporary stopping is prohibited, including sidewalks. Obstructing people or vehicles and double-parking are also prohibited. Follow any applicable special local rules.
Your friend points to a white line, but you pause. Colour alone is not enough: check whether it marks an authorised space, which vehicles may use it and what the signs say. If unclear, choose a lawful alternative or ask the responsible authority. Someone else’s parking choice is not your permission slip. You can guess how much chilli you want; do not guess the parking conditions.
Have a backup instead of circling again
You park safely before taking out your phone to look for a parking facility. In Taipei, the official Taipei Parking service lists parking facilities and roadside bays. Select motorcycles and check the location, rates and notices on site. In other cities or counties, consult the local transport or parking authority; Taipei’s service is not a nationwide system.
A space shown on a map is not a reservation. You choose a facility slightly farther from the shop and note a backup. On arrival, check permitted vehicles and opening hours, follow the parking instructions and leave entrances clear. Your friend texts, “Are you there yet?” You reply, “Finding the scooter a place first. Dinner is next.” No searching your phone while riding this time.
Before heading home, plan for the parking charge
Dinner in hand, you check your pocket and find no parking slip. “So nothing to pay?” Do not jump to that conclusion. Taipei’s official one-stop parking service allows lookup by vehicle type and plate number. Whether a charge applies, its deadline and payment method still depend on the notices and official records. If nothing appears or something is unclear, contact the parking authority; a blank result is not proof of free parking.
For a subscription scooter, also confirm who receives parking notices and how charges are handled. Do not assume the monthly fee includes everything. You note the unanswered questions on your phone, then put it away before leaving. Back at the dorm, your roommate asks about the extra egg. “Got it. Left the unanswered questions on a list, not in your dinner.” Next time, check parking before setting off and leave a little room in the journey home.

Questions you may have
Can I park anywhere without a red line?
Not necessarily. Signs, location and access rules still apply.
Do I need a proper space just to buy dinner?
Yes. A short errand does not make a prohibited parking location lawful.
Is a marked bay always free?
No. Check the posted rates, hours and management notices.
How do I check without a paper slip?
Use the local official parking service and contact the authority if anything is unclear.
Does a subscription include parking charges?
Do not assume so. Check the contract and who handles notices and payment.
