What scooter engine size can your Taiwan motorcycle licence cover?

Over 250cc requires the large-heavy category, while electric scooters are classified by maximum output horsepower. On Saturday morning, you find a 150cc scooter outside a shop. Your friend pats the seat: “It does not look big, so it should be fine, right?” The bodywork looks innocent; the rules do not use eyesight. Keep your wallet in your pocket and compare the licence with the vehicle specifications first.

01 · What to know

Read the licence name, then the vehicle class

You hand the adviser your licence. It says ordinary heavy motorcycle. Under the Road Traffic Safety Regulations, an ordinary light petrol motorcycle is up to 50cc; ordinary heavy is over 50cc and up to 250cc; over 250cc is large heavy. The 150cc scooter sits in the ordinary-heavy range. No need to measure it against your friend’s raised eyebrow.

Do not rely only on a marketplace title. Check the registration, manufacturer specifications or official record. Stop and ask when modifications, labels or documents disagree. A large-heavy licence is not an enlarged photocopy of an ordinary licence. Highway Bureau requirements include being at least 20, holding an ordinary-heavy licence for one year and completing approved training.

02 · What to know

Electric scooters cannot be measured in cc alone

Your friend points to an electric scooter. “No engine displacement—does any licence work?” This time you do not nod. Electric motorcycles are classified by maximum motor-and-controller output: over 5 to 40 horsepower is ordinary heavy; over 40 horsepower is large heavy. Lower outputs fall into light classes. A quiet vehicle does not put the rules on mute.

Ask the provider to state the registered class, maximum output and matching licence, then compare them with official records. If you hold a foreign licence, international permit or are exchanging a licence, separately verify Taiwan validity and permitted vehicle categories. Use the international-student licence guide rather than borrowing someone else’s answer.

03 · What to know

The date on a car licence matters too

You remember your car licence and nearly assume an extra card means extra freedom. The Highway Bureau says only car licences obtained before 30 June 2023 retain permission for ordinary light motorcycles. A car licence obtained later does not by itself authorise a light motorcycle. The question is not just “Do I have a car licence?” but when it was obtained and what it covers.

You save a new order on your phone: licence category, vehicle class and data, then purpose, price and colour. Your friend still campaigns for pearl white. “Legal first, good-looking second—we can have both,” you say. You leave without placing an order, but one large question mark is gone. Choosing quickly is not the goal; knowing what you can ride makes the trip home feel lighter.

FAQ

Questions you may have

Can an ordinary-heavy licence cover 125cc or 150cc?

Both generally fall above 50cc and up to 250cc; confirm the actual vehicle record and licence status.

Can it cover exactly 250cc?

The rule states over 50cc and up to 250cc; verify the registered vehicle class.

How many cc is an electric scooter?

Do not rely on cc. Check maximum motor-and-controller horsepower and the official class.

Does a car licence always cover a light scooter?

No. A car licence obtained after 30 June 2023 does not by itself permit riding a light motorcycle.

Does a foreign licence use the same scope automatically?

No assumption should be made. Verify Taiwan validity, endorsement or exchange rules and permitted categories.
